A MORBID FASCINATION OF MOSCOW BLENDS WITH TEMPTING HAVANA SPICE IN A MASTERLY PICARESQUE NOVEL
An adventurous Moscow copywriter Konstantin wins a position on a radio station on billiards. Some time later, with the money stolen from his unscrupulous boss, he is in search for a place to hide. He realizes suddenly that he can fly as far away as Cuba right then, because there is no visa required. At once Cuba draws him into a whirlpool of romance, sex and lies: there is a luscious Michelle he falls for; there is a con with a manuscript of “The Old Man and the Sea” he wants to buy; there is a paralyzed girl in love with him whom he has never seen. Through the flashbacks interlaced with the Cuban story we learn more about the Moscow past of Konstantin and understand why he is not dreaming about going home… With its main character that reader will miss when the story ends, SUGAR MAMA is a fastpaced, enveloping read, too vivid to be forgotten.
Andrey Filatov was born in 1964 in Moscow. He has always wanted to be a writer, but for no purpose, as he says himself, graduated from Moscow Polygraphic University as an engineer. Then he worked as a geography teacher, tried his own business, and “by chance” started studying journalism and writing short stories. Now he works as a copywriter in an advertising agency. SUGAR MAMA is his first novel.
